The Body Keeps the Score of Over-Functioning: How I Learned to Listen Before My Nervous System Crashed

For years, I thought exhaustion was a badge of honor. It took my shoulders locking, my breath shortening, and a quiet moment on the coast to realize my body was begging for peace.

For most of my life, my mind ran the show.

If there was a problem to solve, I solved it. If a project needed finishing, I pushed through the night. If someone around me was struggling, I stepped up to fix it. To the outside world, I was reliable, capable, and hyper-efficient.

To my own body, I was a dictator.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that my constant productivity wasn't just a strong work ethic—it was an armor. It was the physical manifestation of chronic over-functioning and perfectionism. I was operating in a perpetual state of high-functioning fight-or-flight, holding my breath through every task, waiting for the moment when everything would finally feel "done."

Spoiler alert: that moment never came. Because when you live in a state of chronic over-functioning, "done" doesn't exist. There is only the next goal, the next person to support, and the next fire to put out.

Eventually, the body stops whispering and starts shouting.

The Physical Price of Holding It All Together

We often talk about stress as a mental concept, but stress is profoundly physical. Your mind might convince you that you can handle another project, another late night, or another emotional burden, but your nervous system keeps an absolute, flawless ledger.

Looking back, the signs were everywhere:

  • The permanent shoulder drop: My shoulders were practically wrapped around my ears, locked in a perpetual bracing posture.

  • Shallow chest breathing: I was rarely drawing breath deep into my belly; I was living on shallow, rapid gasps air-locked in my chest.

  • The clenched jaw and tight palms: I would catch myself working at my desk with my fingers balled into tight fists, completely unaware I was doing it.

  • Unrefreshing sleep: Waking up after eight hours feeling as though I had spent the night lifting heavy machinery.

When you live with your nervous system stuck in overdrive, your body spends all its resources on survival. It doesn't care about rest, deep digestion, or creative flow—it only knows how to brace for impact.

"We don't just think our stress; we wear it in our muscles, breathe it into our lungs, and store it in our energetic field."

How Somatic Practices Reset an Over-Functioning Nervous System

True healing didn't begin for me when I read another self-help book. It began when I learned to step away from the noise and actually dropped back into my physical form.

When I started practicing slow living—taking those first spontaneous coastal road trips and spending time completely off-grid—the silence was almost uncomfortable at first. Without constant busywork to distract me, my body finally had space to show me how tired it really was.

It was during this transition that the deep synergy between life coaching, energy work, and somatic release became clear:

1. Recognizing the "Brace"

Learning to recognize the physical signs of an over-functioning nervous system is the first step toward genuine recovery. As you read these words, drop your shoulders. Unclench your jaw. Soften your belly. Notice how automatically your body was holding on to physical tension without your permission.

2. Re-establishing Boundaries with Your Time

Over-functioning is almost always a boundary issue. When we say "yes" to every demand, we are actively taking space away from our own recovery. Learning to say, "I have reached my capacity for today" is a profound form of nervous system medicine.

3. Energetic & Physical Touch Regulation

Energy work like Reiki and somatic practices like cuddle therapy work directly with the subtle energy field and the physical nervous system. They bypass the analytical mind—the part of you that insists on fixing everything—and communicate directly with your physiology: You are safe. You can let go now.

From Surviving to Living on Your Own Terms

Slowing down isn't about abandoning your responsibilities or giving up your ambition. It’s about shifting from an exhaustion-driven life to an intention-driven life.

When you stop letting perfectionism drive the bus, your health shifts. Your sleep deepens. Your mind clears. You regain the energy not just to get through the day, but to actually savor your life, your relationships, and your personal freedom.

Your body was never meant to carry the weight of the world. It was designed to move, rest, feel, and thrive.
